For more than 70 years, the Alexander Globe Building stood as a silent witness to the evolution of care at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. From its inaugural celebration on a spring day in 1954 to its recent demolition on February 2, 2026, the building served as a cornerstone of the hospital’s identity.
While its physical structure has been cleared to make way for the future, the stories held within its walls remain a vital part of our community’s heritage.
A House of Healing and History
The story of the Globe Building began on May 12, 1954; a date chosen to honor the birth of Florence Nightingale. It opened its doors as a modern Nurses’ Residence, offering twelve furnished rooms for the dedicated staff of WLMH.
In those early years, the residence was more than just a dormitory; it was a home. The large front living room hosted intimate Christmas parties and seasonal celebrations, often decorated with pink hand-tooled flowers created by the nurses themselves. Mrs. Globe officiated the opening ceremony, a tribute to her late husband’s tireless work for the hospital.
Generations of Service
As the landscape of healthcare shifted, so did the purpose of the Globe Building:
The 1970’s Transition: By 1973, the demand for onsite nursing accommodation decreased, leading the hospital to rent the space to the Niagara Health Unit and then many other community services supporting health programs.
The Hospital Foundation’s Hub: For decades, the WLMH Foundation operated out of the front portion of the building, making it the primary point of connection for donors and community supporters.
Making Way for the Future
The removal of the Alexander Globe Building marks the end of an era, but it is also a necessary step in the hospital site’s total transformation. The space where the residence once stood is currently being redeveloped into essential parking for staff and visitors, easing the transition into the new facility.
The momentum continues this month. In early March 2026, the demolition of the main hospital building is scheduled to begin. This phase will allow for a thoughtfully designed landscape that finally complements the beautiful, state-of-the-art new hospital.
While it is never easy to say goodbye to a building filled with history and meaning, redevelopment ensures our hospital facility continues to meet the needs of those we serve – today and for decades to come.
Today, the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation has settled into its main home across the street from the new hospital, ready to support the next 70 years of local healthcare. As well, a satellite office for the Foundation is located in the main lobby of the new hospital.
We pause to honor the nurses, clinicians, and volunteers who called the Globe Building home, and we look forward with pride to the landscape emerging in its place.
